Micropenis: When is Penis Size A Sociological Issue?
Sunday, September 20, 2009
So you're sitting at home, reading the latest penis enlargement blogs because you're frustrated, concerned, maybe even completely distraught over what you feel to be an inadequate genital size. Well, many men struggle with a size issue far beyond the realm of 'inadequate'.
Micropenis is a term used to describe male genitals that are dramatically undersized. This means that the fully erect organ usually tops out at around one inch. This is a medical condition that is usually identified at birth. Unfortunately there is not a huge amount of treatment available to grown men with this syndrome, although our team has noted a lot of similarities in the advice offered to those with micropenis, to those normal, if undersized, men seeking counsel on penis enlargement.
Doctors suggest that the cause of this unfortunate condition may be related to an unbalance in sex hormones produced by the fetus, and those it is exposed to in the womb. It is also possible for this state to be entirely unrelated to sex hormones, and rather be a result of a failure of the pituitary gland. There are also a set of uniquely named 'homeobox' genes that affect only finger length and penis size, and nothing else.
Advice given to many of these patients generally ranges from testosterone therapy solutions to surgical options. Because testosterone may enhance male characteristics, but not necessarily add greatly to penis size or girth, it is usually prescribed in order to complement other therapies.

Surgical options have been a troubling issue for many micropenis patients, as in the past gender reassignment surgery has been the given solution. This means that children with genitals deemed radically undersized were surgically altered in order to give them female characteristics – a vulva – and often not informed that this choice had been made for them. Years of female hormones and therapies and deception left a group of intersex kids, as these people are now termed, feeling very much out of place, hurt, and lost.
It's difficult to imagine the pain and confusion felt by these children who are either denied any choice regarding their own gender surgery, or left with completely shrunken genitals and very little hope of change. This may be a little 'bleeding heart', but this issue is close to those of us who have been researching penis growth with an aim towards improving the lives of other men.
