Real Talk: Penis Enlargement & Average Penis Size

This is real talk.  Most men have a misconception about their penis size, both actual and in relation to other men.  Penis enlargement techniques are often employed because men think that their penis size is lower than average penis sizeThis perception is not entirely true.  We will be looking at the misconceptions regarding penis size in Western culture.

The human male has larger sized genitalia than any other primate, both in terms of actual size and in relation to the size of the body – both in length and girth.  Average male penis size is between 5.1 inches and 5.9 inches in length – the measurement taken along the top of the penis when it is standing parallel to the floor and erect.  Average girth is approximately 4.85 inches, again when fully erect.  Yet, while these are the averages, the median penis size is actually smaller than the average. This means that most penises are smaller than average.  These are the numbers on penis size.

Most men see their penis as smaller than it actually is.  Most men also see average penis size is being larger than it actually is.  This creates a large disparity.  There are multiple reasons for this disparity between perceived penis size and actual penis size.  The first is quite simple – it is education.

The second is related to how men see their penis.  Men most often view their penis from above.  This angle distorts penile size making the shaft seem shorter.

The third reason has to do with cultural perceptions.   In Western culture, many media representations of the penis display larger than average genitals.  A large penis is seen has highly desirable – personally for men, and sexually for women. Penis size is societally designated as a measure of manliness.  A large penis is seen to equal more of a man.  Many men live feeling as though they are inadequate because they believe their penis to be small.

Many men suffer from Small Penis Syndrome (SPS) as a result of this skewed conception of penis size.  Those who suffer from SPS tend to have low self worth and are less confident and competent.

Penis enlargement works to remedy this problem by both increasing the size of ones penis and, more importantly, by improving the image of ones own penis.  Penis enlargement methods are diverse and are many.  Some of the more common methods involve cosmetic surgery, penis enlargement pills, penis pumps, jelqing or stretching, and stretching or hanging.

Research is mixed as to how much these techniques increase the physical size of the penis, however, men tend to believe that they have larger penises when using penis enlargement techniques.  There is a placebo effect even if the techniques themselves are not increasing the size of the penis.  In other words, penis enlargement techniques have positive effects on men who use it – especially when it comes to men suffering from SPS or other forms of male penis envy or low self esteem.

Penis enlargement has become a valuable tool in helping men cope with the reality of society’s misrepresentation of male genitalia.  It is difficult to deal with unrealistic expectations and this is one real way to deal with it.
